Frequetly Asked Questions
|
- What is Part-66?
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is the body responsible for ensuring that National Competent Authorities e.g. the UK Civil Aviation Authority Safety Regulation Group verify aircraft engineer licence applications.
For maintaining aircraft of 5700kg MTOM and above, but excluding airships, licences are issued under EASA Implementing Rule (IR) Part-66. Part-66 is a common European aircraft maintenance licence recognised in all EASA member states.
- Who needs to apply for a Part-66 licence?
You need to apply for a Part-66 licence if you:
- have never been licensed, but wish to further your career as an aircraft maintenance engineer
- wish to up- grade your existing Part-66 licence to a higher category
- wish to convert your BCAR Section L licence to an unrestricted Part-66 licence
- How do I qualify for the licence?
There are three main steps to go through.
- Find out which modules you need for your requirements, and decide on an appropriate mode of study. Brooklands College offers formal Part-66 training on-line through PART66NOW and in traditional 'Instructor Led' format.
- When you are ready, apply to the CAA and sit your formal examination. These exams are held in credit for five years, while you complete your licence requirements.
- Complete the relevant experience. This can be accomplished concurrently if you are studying part time. Always check with the CAA as to what your requirements will be, but you will need between two and five years of practical experience.
- You will need to formally record your experience, preferably in an approved engineers log book (guidance available from the CAA)
- How long does it take to complete each module?
There is no set time limit and you can study whenever it suits you. Some people have found that they can complete a Part-66 module (including all the assessments) in less than three weeks, whilst others need a few months. It's up to you how fast you progress through the course. NB Some modules are very large due to their extensive syllabus content!
- What equipment do I need to access the site?
For a full list of requirements, please go to the help section of the website by clicking here or selecting 'HELP' from the top menu at any time. However, the website has been designed to be used on just about any modern PC with an internet connection.
- What about the CAA examinations...can I take them on-line?
You need to apply directly to the CAA to sit their exams. They are held regularly at venues across the UK. Alternatively, you may be able to take your exams at an approved Part-147 organisation. In either case, PART66NOW will provide you with plenty of exam preparation through simulated exams, formatted to be just like the formal papers from the CAA.
- I've registered for the course, how long will it take before I can start?
If you sign up on-line using your credit/debit card, you can start your course immediately. You will then be assigned to a personal tutor normally within 72 hours. If you registered by post, normally you will be able to make a start on the course within a week of us receiving your enrolment form. In some cases, we may be able to set you up on the same day that we receive your form. You will know that your course is ready for you when you receive an e-mail from us giving you a Username and Password. Once you have this information, you can get started - it's as simple as that.
- Tell me about the personal tutors... who are they and how do I get in touch?
For each module that you take, you will be allocated a personal tutor whose job it is to support you and to ensure that you get the best out of your course. Your tutor will provide you with feedback on all of your course assessments and is someone who will help you with problems and questions. Our PART66NOW tutors have been chosen for their special knowledge of the subject that they are supporting and are all experienced teachers and trainers (click here or select 'Meet Our Tutors' from the top menu to find out more). Regardless of who your tutor is, you can make contact with them by logging onto the website and clicking the messages link from the menu on the left hand side.
- Will I get a certificate when I complete a module?
Yes, provided you can obtain a mark of 75% or more in the final assessment for the module. This will tell you that you are ready for the CAA examination but, if you need to, you can repeat the final assessment as many times as you like until you are happy with your marks. In any event, your tutor will give you extra help on any questions that you get wrong and will also suggest topics that you can focus on for extra revision.
